Shabbat Morning Class
Presented by Daniel Bogard, Rabbinic Intern
Beginning Saturday,
January 9 & 23 (more
TBA)
Time 10-11am
Tuition: Free of Charge
Back by popular demand, this innovative class will be continued
this year! Many congregants have expressed a desire to learn
more about the Shabbat and Yom Tov morning service. This class
provides that chance…Our
New Rabbinic Intern,
Daniel Bogard,
will facilitate this exceptional opportunity for our
congregants. Participants will learn everything from the order
of our service, to the choreography (when we stand, bow, etc.)
from how to take part in an aliyah, to the meaning of our
prayers. The commentary to our movement’s Siddur (or Hadash
– an extraordinary publication) will be used as the primary
text. Course participants will have the opportunity to discuss
the theological implications of their favorite prayers. Each
session begins with a brief Torah study. The class is timed to
allow everyone to join the rest of the congregation for the
sermon and conclusion of services.

Rabbi Wise will continue to lead a lively discussion gleaned
from subjects introduced in the weekly Torah portion. Our
textbook remains our wonderful Humash: Etz Hayim. The
class emphasizes how to have a “conversation” with the Torah.
Through this process, we look to strengthen our Judaism and
improve our lives with the help of contemporary commentaries and
Midrash. No previous experience in Torah study is required.
This class is intended to help everyone appreciate all the
Etz Hayim has to offer and also to help to make the Torah
reading during our services more meaningful. It is a wonderful
way to begin adult studies in general and Torah Study in
particular. Applying what we study to our everyday lives is at
the heart of this fascinating class.

Judaism is often described as ethical monotheism. Not only do we
believe in one G-d, we believe this one G-d wants us to live our
lives in a certain way: encouraging some behaviors while
discouraging others. Not surprisingly, after thousands of years
with such a theology, Judaism is not neutral on anything.
Furthermore, there are differences in some positions among the
denominations of Judaism. This Sunday morning course will
explore a variety of ethical issues. We will use Torah and
rabbinic texts (in English); in addition to current literature,
to discuss the various ethical challenges we face as Jews.
