We are pleased to announce that Adath Israel Congregation has joined with the Interfaith Hospitality Network of Greater Cincinnati! We are only the second synagogue to join the network, and we hope others will follow. The mission of Interfaith Hospitality Network of Greater Cincinnati is to provide homeless families with emergency shelter and hospitality through interfaith communities and to work with these families to find and retain stable housing. It's estimated that about 2,500 families are homeless at one time or another each year. Families with children are the fastest growing segment of the homeless population in Greater Cincinnati. 32% of the homeless in our area are children.

IHN’s Shelter Program provides shelter, meals, and supportive services to homeless families in Cincinnati. It is one of only two family shelters admitting fathers, two parent families, and male children over age 12. Shelter and meals are provided at host congregations. The Day Center provides case management, capacity-building classes (life skills, budgeting, and parenting), showers, laundry facilities, personal storage, and kitchen facilities. Upon graduating from the Shelter program, most guests move directly into homes of their own, either subsidized or market rate depending on their income and other qualifications. Only about seven percent of IHN’s guests have returned to area family shelters over the last three years.

ACTION ALERT! VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

For our partnership with the Interfaith Hospitality Network, we need to establish a bank of volunteers who will have choices among many different tasks as we prepare to serve as an emergency shelter for families during our one week period in December 2009.

To volunteer for this program (or to learn more about it as we get closer), please email Kathy Wise at kawise@cinci.rr.com or call her at 351-1039. You can also call the synagogue office at 793-1800 to put your name on our volunteer list. The need is great, our possibilities to make a difference are great and IT'S A MITZVAH! Thank you.

Dates to remember:
