Yom Kippur is here to encourage us and challenge us to look in the mirror straight on and see exactly what there is to see. We are told that such honesty is essential if we are to fix ourselves and improve.  Perhaps this is one of the hardest things for a person to do.  Perhaps this is why we are “obligated” to do it not only on Yom Kippur but especially on this day.  Yom Kippur is a gift; a precious, powerful gift filled with awe, hope and love.  Yom Kippur commands us to improve.  Yom Kippur proclaims we can improve.  Yom Kippur demands we understand that if our world is to improve, each individual must.  This is why our Yom Kippur teshuvah, our reflections and prayers are critically important not just for us but for the person next to us and for our world.  We will study and discuss teachings that can help us to understand all of this and actually do something about it.
